EXPLORE AND STAY

The flora and fauna found here is varied and changes with the seasons

Along the marshes many specialist native salt marsh plants can be found.

Cord grass, glasswort, sea purslane, sea aster, sea spinach, sea wormwood, scurvy grass, sea lavender and other rich calcareous flora are regularly fed in the ebb and flow of the tides.

Curlew, little egret, little grebe, grey heron, cormorant, oyster catcher, shelduck, mute swan, marsh harrier and osprey are just some of the visitors that come to feed on the estuary.

You may be fortunate to see them from our marshes or on a kayak trip

down the estuary.

On walks along the meandering paths and depending on the season, keep an eye out for plants such as bee orchid, pyramid orchid, hairy violet and white violet. St Johns wort and many other native wildflowers can be found along with lichen, ferns, fungi and our sacred teasel which has an amazing soothing, healing effect on insect bites!

Many species of bees thrive here with the abundance of native flora,

Lizards bask in the sunshine and newts, frogs and toads hide in the damp and mossy crevices. Otters, vole, weasel, rabbits, badger and fox are all here if you know

where to look.

The sound of bird song usually fills the air from sunrise to sun down.

In summer swifts and swallows swoop low up and down the meadows catching insects rising from the grass.

Among the many other species you may see nuthatch, woodpecker, finches, goldcrest, tits, kingfisher and

birds of prey.

When the sun shines in summer, butterflies dance and flutter from flower to flower, tree to tree and if you are very fortunate you may spot the extremely elusive brown hairstreak butterfly flitting around the ash tree canopies.

Silver washed fritillary, comma, gate keeper, small blue and many other species can also be found along with various colourful species of moth.
